These
naturally include representing all of his constituents, some 72,000 at the
last count in 2001, in Middlesbrough indicated opposite on the map.
In addition to this role, he also is a member of the
House of Commons Commission which manages the affairs of the House of
Commons as well as being the Chairman of the Finance and Services committee
which manages the annual budget of the House of Commons and its many
employees.
Sir Stuart is also a member of the government and has been Second
Church Estates Commissioner since 1997. These two roles have
been held since the year 2000.
Sir
Stuart also has a distinguished career as both a Barrister and a
writer

stories and political tracts to his name, such as 'Pathway To The
Euro' here.
Outside interests
include good relations with France where Sir Stuart sits on the
Supervisory committee of the Foundation for Innovative Political
Thinking in Paris and has chaired several high profile
Franco-British conferences in recent years.
Since June 2005, he is the Chairman
of the Franco British Parliamentary Relation Committee,
whose
aim is to foster relations between The United Kingdom and France
and especially between both houses of Parliament and Assemblee
Nationale and Senate in Paris.
